Immunofluorescence in Oral Pathology: Part I—Methodology
نویسندگان
چکیده
Immunofluorescence is an immunological method used to demonstrate the presence of antigen and antibodies in tissues or serum. Immunofluorescence techniques have become indispensable in modern pathology laboratories and have greatly contributed to the diagnosis, treatment and understanding of autoimmune bullous diseases, hereditary bullous diseases, collagen-vascular diseases, many inflammatory dermatosis and cutaneous tumors. This review emphasizes the basics of immunofluorescence techniques, methodology, interpretation of the results and the newer advancements in the field. The application of immunofluorescence techniques in various vesiculobullous disorders will be extensively discussed in the subsequent parts. Part II will deal with the pemphigus group and other dermatological conditions with oral involvement and part III with subepidermal immunobullous diseases.

Comparison of Serum Autoantibodies to Desmogleins I, III in Patients with Oral Lichen Planus and Healthy Controls
Background & Objective: Lichen planus is a mucocutaneous disease which is relatively common and in 30-70% of patients, mucosal lesions can be seen and known as a precancerous lesion but its etiology is not completely understood. Desmogleins I and III are the main desmosomal transmembrane proteins. These proteins have been identified as the autoantigen of the autoimmune disease. The aim...
متن کاملImmunofluorescence in Oral Pathology—Part II: Pathology and Immunofluorescent Patterns in Subepidermal Immunobullous Disorders
The immunobullous disorders are a group of autoimmune diseases in which components of the epidermis and basement membrane zone are targeted, resulting in the formation of cutaneous and mucosal blisters. Based on the level of blistering, the autoimmune blistering diseases may be subdivided into intraepidermal and subepidermal. An exhaustive list of immunobullous disorders is beyond the scope of ...
متن کاملImmunofluorescence in Oral Pathology—Part III: Pathology and Immunofluorescent Patterns in Intraepithelial Immunobullous Disorders
Dermatologic disorders frequently parallel with oral involvement which dental practitioners should be familiar with. In continuation with part II, the immunofluorescence patterns in the intraepidermal pemphigus group and its variants: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) are dealt in this section. Also, a brief note is added on other mucocutaneous disorders showing similar...
متن کاملDetection of immune complexes in human dental periapical lesions by anticomplement immunofluorescence technique.
Twenty-five human dental periapical lesions were obtained. The lesions were frozen, sectioned, and examined for the presence of immune complexes by employing an anticomplement immunofluorescence (ACIF) technique. Twenty-three of the periapical specimens were positive for antigen-antibody complexes. No staining was noted in the two lesions that were histologically diagnosed as periapical scar ti...
